Resin coatings stick by soaking into the pores of the concrete and gripping a rough profile. A smooth, troweled or sealed slab gives them almost nothing to hold. Grinding opens the surface, removes the weak top layer called laitance and strips out contaminants, so the coating bonds to sound concrete instead of a dusty skin.

Grinding, shot blasting and acid etching

Most professional installers use planetary diamond grinders connected to industrial vacuums. The diamond grit is chosen for the hardness of the slab and the profile the coating maker calls for. Shot blasting, which throws steel beads at the surface, is common on large commercial floors. Acid etching, the method in many DIY kits, is generally considered less reliable because it does not remove sealers or oil and leaves residue if not rinsed thoroughly.

Edges and corners are ground with smaller hand tools. Ask how the installer handles the perimeter and the area under the overhead door.

What has to come off

Many Weatherford slabs carry something on top: a cure-and-seal applied when the house was built, an old acrylic sealer, paint, tile adhesive, or oil left by a leaking truck. Each needs to be removed or treated before coating. Oil-soaked shop floors may need degreasing and repeated grinding, and some stains go deep enough that the area has to be cut out and patched. A failed earlier coating is its own job; see coating removal and recoat.

Grinding also exposes cracks and pits that were hidden under the surface. Those are filled before the base coat; see crack and joint repair.

Dust control and new slabs

Grinding produces fine silica dust, so ask how it will be captured. Vacuum-connected equipment keeps most of it out of the air and off belongings. On brand-new slabs, grinding can only start once the concrete has cured enough, and a moisture test helps decide when the floor is ready for resin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip grinding to save money?

You can, but skipped prep is one of the most common reasons coatings peel. Most coating manufacturers require mechanical prep for their products to perform.

Is grinding loud and messy?

It is loud while running. With vacuum-connected grinders the dust is mostly contained, but plan to clear the space and keep people and pets away.
